Sehwé Village Percussion is a community that gathers to celebrate its love of West African rhythms and songs. Sehwé (“happiness” in Susu language) also seeks to be an intentionally multi-ethnic group who hopes to foster diversity, inclusion and understanding through sharing the experience of West Africa’s rich drumming tradition. We invite everyone to join us, including beginner drummers and non-drummers, and ask only that you be interested in learning, playing, singing and occasionally performing West African-inspired music. We meet every Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Aikido Decatur, 104 Sycamore Place, Decatur GA 30030 across from Carpe Diem. On 2 Thursdays per month, the group is led by Aly Camara, master drummer from Guinea, West Africa. The remaining Thursday’s are devoted to reviewing previous material, rehearsing for upcoming performances and experimenting with the addition of other traditional and non-traditional instruments. We have loaner instruments to use free of charge. Of course, dancers are also invited and dancing is always encouraged!
